How to Make an Invisible Dog Leash

by Dr. Elisa Foster

The world first learned about invisible dog leashes in the 1970s. Back then, they were fun toys. The idea is simple: you get a leash and go out to walk your imaginary pet. The result is fun and good humor as you watch the reaction of other people to your “invisible dog”. Which is, let’s admit it, nothing to the reaction of real live dogs watching the empty leashes. They can’t understand the struggles of invisible dogs.

A little over a decade ago there was a flash mob in New York with dozens of people taking to the streets of Brooklyn with the invisible dog leashes.

Would you like to do the same? Or maybe make a fun toy for your kid? There’s a fairly simple way you can do that.

There are only a few things you’ll need: a rope, some thick flexible wire, and an actual dog collar.

  1. Get some rope that’s about as thick as your thumb and as long as an actual leash. The idea is to hold this rope in front of you, not drag it along. This is why you’ll need wire.
  2. Cut a piece of thick wire to make it just a little bit longer than your rope. It shouldn’t be just as thick, just enough to be easily thread through the length of the rope so it could hold it in place and make it flexible. Just make sure that it doesn’t stick out of your rope. This might take some time and patience.
  3. Now use the extra length of wire to attach the collar to the rope. If you want to go the extra mile, get a dog harness and thread a wire all through it to make it keep shape and create a more realistic illusion of an invisible dog.

That’s it! You have your very own invisible dog leash and you can go out and surprise your neighbors and their dogs – or watch your kid do that.

Conclusion

Whether you want to entertain your kids, organize a flash mob or just really surprise your dog, an invisible dog leash is good fun. And it’s pretty easy to make too!
