How to Clean Dog Diarrhea Off Wood Floor in 3 Steps

by Dr. Elisa Foster

This is something that every dog owner dreads: you get out of bed in the morning and immediately realize that your pup has had an upset stomach the night before and the floor is now covered in his liquid feces. It’s important to get the housekeeping right, since the stains look disgusting and you need a way to get the unpleasant smell out. In addition, the dog will smell the residue and return to the same spot to reuse it as a toilet. It’s important to clean the area quickly and efficiently and get rid of the stinky aroma to avoid these problems.

Dog poop removal in 3 easy steps

It’s not uncommon to find an unwanted present on the wooden floor if your dog is sick or has been inside too long. If your furry buddy poops inside, don’t punish him and don’t wait to clean it. The sooner you clean the fecal stains, the easier it will be to remove.

Step 1

Keep yourself and the clean part of the house safe. Wear disposable latex gloves to keep your hands clean. Also keep an open plastic bag ready to throw soiled items in, instead of carrying them across the house to the trash can and worrying if they will drip onto the floor.

You can use paper towels. Seal them in a zip lock bag or tie it in a regular plastic grocery bag.

Step 2

Remove the fecal matter. This should be done before the feces stick to the surface, otherwise it will be much harder to clean up. The best way to wipe off traces of diarrhea is to use disposable paper towels or old towels that can be thrown away later.

Step 3

Apply a household detergent to the soiled area. The area must be disinfected and make sure your pooch doesn’t associate it with his new toilet area. First, use a detergent that’s safe for the flooring. This will make the area visually clean. After that, you should apply a pet odor neutralizer. It will get rid of any odors that might re-attract the dog to the same spot.

A little puppy you bring home might not know that it’s forbidden to poop inside. In their first months at home, most puppies are quarantined due to vaccinations. So it becomes a habit for the little guys to go into a diaper or on a piece of newspaper on the floor. When you start taking your puppy out, he can play merrily without going to the toilet.

Another reason could be lack of attention. It can happen that you take your dog for a morning walk and leave him alone all day. Out of curiosity and frustration, he might crap on the walkway. This is his way of expressing his displeasure with his owners, showing that he doesn’t want to be left alone for long.

If a senior dog who’s used to going outside regularly suddenly starts pooping indoors, look at two potential causes. Chances are, your pet is sick. It’s very common for dogs that eat dry food to have problems with their urinary system.
